There have been a number of studies as to why obesity has become such an epidemic in the Western world. There looks to be a recent breakthrough, according to the Imperial College of London.
Studies have been going on for the past few years where gut bacteria and hormones have been looked as the lead cause of obesity. At this point, looks like there may be a treatment for this condition. Hormone treatment has been the most common test being done. This has been done through injections and patches. According to the results, this method has mirrored the results of gastric bypass and the lap band surgeries. This also means the the costs could be significantly less for those who don’t have insurance coverage for the invasive procedures.
Another great unintended result has been that a number of people who have been struggling with Type 2 diabetes, have been able to come off their insulin treatments. The reason for this is that the craving for sweets and fatty feeds is significantly decreased.
Another biggest result of the early tests is that the people on the hormone treatment consume 30% less food. Those who were on the hormones, also found that eating a moderate to smaller meal feel fuller sooner, as though that had consumed their previous (larger) amount.
Granted this study is still in the early stages, but it looks like hope is on the horizon and coming quickly.
