Yep, there is a movement happening. I am not sure you heard this one, but you may want to sit down for this…there is petition going around for the FDA to approve a Food Stamp Program for pets.
The reason is the current benefits programs do not allow for low-income families to buy pet food to supplies for their animals. There has been over 100,000 people who have signed this petition, the truth is the pets should not suffer, go hungry or be given up because of financial hardships, as a financial situation can change and get out of poverty, which allows the family to continue to care for their pet(s).
Keep in mind, a number of the people, including children, benefit with the companionship of a pet. Not only are pets therapeutic, but they teach and continue to require responsibility. Some of these pets are also therapy pets and “assistance” for people with disabilities, PTSD and other conditions.
Others think the idea is ridiculous, as it is a simple answer, get rid of it, if you can’t afford it. The problem is there are 6.5 million animals in shelters, which is more than can be adopted and/or cared for. 1.5 million of those animals are euthanized.
Those who have pets, can’t imagine their life without their furry family member, and children most of all.
