We have all seen them, the Mega Church’s. They are sometimes subtle from the outside, other times, they are very opulent. Most of the time, what you see on the outside is by design, as it exemplifies the attitude of the church, other times, it is for economy. Regardless, when you see a church, you normally know what you are seeing.
My old stomping ground in the Phoenix AZ area of Ahwatukee, a church knew of, the Mountain Park Christian Church, has very cool laid back vibe and a very nice, but not over the top looking church. Well it seems that they have stepped up their game a bit.
They already had a 5 story cross out front, so you know where you are going, but they seem to have an issue with the neighbors over one issue…the neon lights that were added to their 5-story cross. As you will see, it looks a bit like Las Vegas and the neighbors were not happy.
The idea was to be a lighthouse to attract attention from the freeways, but that seemed to backfire a bit when the strobe effect made the neighbors think they were on the Las Vegas Strip. Keep in mind, this part of Phoenix has a number of Native American casinos. They are working on the problem, but here is a little sample of what the neighbors are seeing. Imagine this in Iowa…
