You thought it was just a joke from TV, but there are people who really think turkeys can fly…and they can…from treetop to tree top at a speed of 55 mph at an altitude of 100 ft or less.
Just for a historical purpose, here is a clip from the TV show “WKRP in Cincinnati”
Now this makes us all laugh, until you realize that it really did happen back in the 1970’s…and believe it or not…just this past weekend.
Back in the 1970’s the turkey drop wasn’t as dramatic, WQXI in Atlanta tossed turkeys off the back of a moving truck. While the result was pretty much the same as what you saw in the video above, they also garnered a lot of ridicule, which forced the station to change staff and NEVER do that stunt again.
So, you would think in 2017, the idea of throwing turkeys out of helicopters and trucks would be not only frowned upon, but avoided at all cost.
Well…I have news for you.
In Yellville, Arkansas it happened again (as it has in previous years)…just this past weekend during the annual Turkey Trot Parade. For years the town has had an anonymous pilot throw turkeys out of an air plane. But in all fairness, they stopped the practice from 2012-15…because they started the practice of throwing them off the courthouse roof top, which was 600-800 feet high. Then 2016 came around and so did tossing turkeys from planes. People actually look forward to this practice annually.
But there is a concern. After the turkeys are dropped, some people have expressed outrage about where the turkeys may land…on houses, on people, on powerlines…and sure, there are a few people who live there that are upset…so, now PETA, the FAA and the state are involved and the news came out to take note…take a looksie
