Did you know that more than 14% of Burlington residents face food insecurity? On any given day, 1 in 11 Burlington children go to bed hungry.
Please join the United Way of Southeast Iowa and Branch 222 of the National Association of Letter Carriers in tapping the collective power of our community to support Stamp Out Hunger, the largest all-volunteer, one-day food collection effort.
Simply leave your donation of non-perishable food items next to your mailbox on Saturday, May 11. Letter carriers will collect these food donations on that day as they deliver mail along their postal routes and distribute them to over 10 food pantries in Burlington. This year there is a big need for ready-to-eat items that don’t require a can opener or need to be cooked to be eaten.
People who have questions about the drive should contact Megan Brincks at the United Way of Southeast Iowa at 319-752-7831 or office@unitedwayseia.org. Volunteers are also needed to help weigh, sort, and collect food.

Johnny Zatylny will amaze the audience with his vocal interpretation of the one-and-only Freddie Mercury of Queen. Mercury was no run-of-the-mill rocker. With his four-octave range, he could do it all from falsetto to baritone. His voice had an operatic quality and is not easily imitated. Zatylny is one of the few who can almost match Mercury note for note.
The audience will revel in the visual and audio experience of this Queen tribute with hits like “We Are the Champions,” We Will Rock You,” Bohemian Rhapsody,” “Somebody to Love,” and “Another One Bites the Dust.”

This July, hundreds of volunteers will pile into canoes to take on seventy-five miles of the Skunk River in Keokuk, Washington, Jefferson, Henry, Lee, and Des Moines Counties, to scrounge out
every tin can, lost shoe, bowling ball, tire, and any other trash they can find from the waterway.
Iowa Project AWARE, an acronym for A Watershed Awareness River Expedition, is a canoeing and educational event where participants paddle down a different river in Iowa every summer, removing trash along the way. This year’s Iowa Project AWARE is scheduled for July 7-12 on the Skunk River from the Keokuk/Washington County border to just before the Mississippi River in Des Moines County.
After a long day of cleaning the river, volunteers gather back in camp to enjoy educational programs that broaden watershed awareness and strengthen community understanding. Topics include geology, ecology, natural resources, local history, and archaeology of the watershed. Along with programs, there are interactive activities where participants can improve their outdoor skills and get hands-on experience with water quality testing and nature identification. The public is welcome and encouraged to attend. Registration is required for on-river cleanup, but in-camp programs require no registration.
Registration is now open at www.iowaprojectaware.org, with limited space available!
