Garrett’s Path 5K Walk/Run

SATURDAY, SEPT. 28th 2013



Race Details:

·         Advance registration now through Sept. 20th - $25.00 (guarantees a shirt and Garrett wristband)

·         Registration 9/21 through race day registration $35.00 (shirt not guaranteed)

·         Early Packet Pick up is Friday, Sept 27th at YMCA from 5 – 7 pm

·         Race Day Registration and Packet Pick up starts at 7:30 am

·         Race Starts at 9 am

·         5K (3.2 miles) – runners/walkers, all ages, strollers/wagons welcome, no pets.

·         Chip timed Race

o        Medals and Awards distributed immediately after the race

§         Custom made Garrett’s Path medals to top male and female winners in each age category

§         Custom made Garrett’s Path Trophy to Overall Male and Overall Female Winners

·         Bounce House and Face Painting for Kids – Buzz from Burlington Bees will also be there

·         All kinds of delicious food to enjoy post-race -- Iowa State Bank Ice Cream Truck, Huge Bake Sale, Breakfast burrito truck 

·         Iowa Donor Network and Iowa Lions Eye Bank representatives will be available for questions and to help people register

Info about Garrett:

·         Just 18 days after celebrating his 10th birthday, Garrett M. Brockway’s life tragically ended after suffering injuries from a falling tree.  Born Feb. 9, 2003 – Died Feb. 27, 2013

·         Beloved son of Bruce and Tiffini Brockway of Burlington.

·         Proud and protective big brother of his sister, Adeline (5 yrs old)

·         Was a 4th grader at Notre Dame, straight A student and was reading at the 9th grade level

·         Enjoyed playing baseball, soccer, basketball, and was a dark green belt in Tae Kwon Do in addition to being a Webelo, alter server at St. John’s Church

·         Favorite Candy bar was Kit Kat

·         Garrett ran in lots of 5K events. Most memorable ones were the 12:1 run and then a Turkey Trot with his Dad in Minneapolis, MN (both last fall).




Garrett’s Gifts of Life

Garrett SAVED 5 LIVES:

·         14-year-old boy received his heart

·         14 year-old-boy with three younger sisters received his liver

·         43-year-old mother received his pancreas (SHE WILL BE ATTENDING THE 5K)

·         28-year-old man that had been on dialysis for over four years received one of his kidney’s

·         65-year-old man that happened to be a “perfect match” received his other kidney


·         63 year old grandmother of 13 and counting

·         10 yr old girl

Garrett’s tissues will help countless others

·         A boy with chronic knee pain has received cartilage

·         A female police officer injured in the line of duty received cartilage

·         A 54 yr old man that injured his knee running in a local turkey trot last year received cartilage

Garrett’s lungs were donated to University of Iowa Cystic Fibrosis Research center and were the youngest non-CF lungs received at the time


Statistics/Facts about Organ Donation:

·         Every 80 minutes someone dies waiting for an organ transplant

·         There are over 118,000 people on the waiting list and those are the ones healthy enough to make the list.

·         Kidneys are the greatest organ in need

·         Every day 79 lives are saved by organ donors
