The Des Moines County Historical Society will hold its first Town Meeting of the season September 18, 2012 in the Burlington Public Library, 210 Court Street beginning at 7:00 P.M.
Each monthlyTown Meeting features a historical subject.
The Sept. 18 program is entitled “The Burlington Zephyr, a Tribute to a Streamliner”.
Steve Parker a local railroad enthusiast – historian will give this presentation. It will feature a history of the first diesel powered streamliner in the United States. A product of the Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad.
A major focus on the record breaking run on May 26, 1934 from Denver, Colorado to Chicago, Illinois; a 1,015 mile non-stop dawn to dusk dash in 13 hours 5 minutes.
Photo's and Memorabilia will be presented.
Steven is now retired from the Des Moines Co. Sheriff's Office, and has served as a volunteer for the Pioneer Zephyr exhibit at the Museum of Science and Industry in Chicago.
Town Meetings are conducted on third Tuesdays, September through May,(Except December) and are FREE AND OPEN TO THE PUBLIC.
