While this subject can be quite incendiary, I won’t delve into the politics, causes and finger-pointing, nor take a personal position. However, there is one father who has and decided to do something very…unconventional.
Joshua McDonald of Tilton, NH gave his daughter to shooting lessons at the age of 5 and has now bought his 6-year old daughter a .22 Ruger to make sure she is prepared in case she is ever in a situation where her school is overtaken by an active school shooter. Joshua is a believer in respecting the weapon, so while he owns his own gun, he felt that it was important that everyone in the house was schooled in the proper use of a firearm. That included his daughter, Adrianna.
While she has owned a BB Gun and had the appropriate lessons, Joshua and his wife decided that that their daughter was ready to be a gun owner.
“When I was growing up I had friends who showed interest in guns but didn’t have proper training with them or education. You could easily see the difference in how they handled a firearm. Honestly that scared me so I do my best to teach my family how to do it properly and safely.”
The images of his daughter shooting and cleaning her gun has created a lot of ire across the internet, but Joshua has this to say,
‘I would say to them to get a grip and open your eyes. ‘Scaring your children away from guns is not going to help the situation. ‘Educate them, familiarize them with them, support them – use your Second Amendment while you still can. ‘Maybe your kid could be the one who ends up saving an entire school or club from a mass shooting…simply by educating them on the topic of guns and safe handling’.
