For years, if you have ever noticed, the frozen food section in the grocery store has gotten smaller, or hasn’t been as well stocked as it was 10-15 years ago. The reason higher quality food options and younger generations making going out to eat a priority over cooking at home. With this came the decline of the TV dinner, you remember: Salisbury steak dinners with mashed potatoes that are still ice cold in the middle and the cherry cobbler that would give your mouth 3rd degree burns.
As with most things in life, what is old is new again, as frozen foods are becoming more in demand. Items like Eggo Waffles, the classic TV dinner I just described and the frozen pizza is coming back into vogue. Not only have the junk food options been on the rise, but so has the more healthy options like frozen veggies and healthy single serving meals (e.g. Healthy Choice and SmartOnes).
So what is making this change happen? Simple: Millennials are having families and frozen foods are a more affordable option than sitting down at your local restaurant…and The Netflix series “Stranger Things”, where Eggo Waffles are a staple of one of the prime characters.
This reversal of fortune for the frozen food options has improved things so much that there are companies that are planning to consolidate and increase more freeze options for all of us.
Now back to my Salisbury Steak while watching Wheel of Fortune on a TV tray.
