A zoo in South Carolina, Riverbanks Zoo and Gardens, revealed earlier this week they had named a baby giraffe after a young girl who died of cancer.
The baby giraffe, Amelia, was named after 8 year old Amelia Attaway who suffered from brain cancer. She passed away in 2014. Amelia loved going to Riverbanks. She particularly loved giraffes and was always curious as to what goes on behind the scenes.
Unfortunately, she was never able to fulfill her wish.
Now, 4 years later, a giraffe mom and dad birthed a young calf. The baby giraffe was born last month, and just this passed Monday, the zoo announced they had named the baby giraffe after their beloved Amelia Attaway. It was the only way they could think to honor Amelia and keep her in their hearts.
