The return of American Idol was one that had a lot of people scratching their heads, when it was announced that it would return 18 months after it was cancelled. Then, as the preparation for its return was taking place, the problems began with Katy Perry named as the first judge…with a $24 million contract. Then it was “radio silence” from the AI camp for how long?
At that point, there were no other judges named, as most of them wanted the same or similar salaries to Ms. Perry. There was also no mention of whether Ryan Seacrest would return as host. Keep in mind, Ryan had just been named co-host to Kelly Ripa and his LA-based morning show was now being done in New York City and beamed back to the West Coast…and still hosting his weekly countdown show.
Then the rumors started swirling around about how Katy Perry wanted Lionel Richie to be on the show with her. And the name Luke Bryan had popped up…with a lot of people in the Country world scratching their heads. Eventually, it all came together and the show was to debut to a lot of fanfare on a Sunday Night, with a weekly Monday Night follow up show, in the same vein as they did before. This made the second night of American Idol placed against The Voice, the show which put AI in the ditch as it ended.
The TV ratings have come out and it had a respectable debut week, but has continued to pale in comparison to The Voice, giving AI 24% less people watching than The Voice, but still sitting in the Top shows of the week.
All of those things, you would think looks like a win, right? Well, hold on. ABC/Disney is getting a lot of blowback recently from their highest paid star of the show, Katy Perry.
In the thrust of the #MeToo movement, which she was very outspoken, she surprised a contestant who was trying out with a kiss on the lips, when he said he was saving his first kiss. That went over very poorly, even after the contestant came out and said that he wasn’t offended and it didn’t mean anything, so it didn’t count. Even still, social media went bananas over it.
If you need a refresher:
And let’s not forget, Ryan Seacrest brings his own set of baggage to this show. He has a pending police report against him from a former make-up artist. As to its validity, we shall see. With the number of sexual harassment complaints that have been field recently against other celebs, who knows how that will end.
Then there is the question of relevant songs on the show. The Vulture has pointed out their song choices have been of question, as many are very old and tired or fairly unknown.
Now there is a new problem with their top paid celebrity judge, Katy Perry: the claim is that she is acting like AI has become her personal dating service by drooling over the men on the show…many times in front of their significant others. The latest was on Sunday when she acted like she wanted to go after Cade Foehner after he performed, while removing her shrug. The problem was her “groupie” demeanor…and that Cade is a minister.
While Yahoo and social media are blasting Katy Perry, Radar Online is reporting that AI may be one and done after this season. Lionel Richie and Luke Bryan are supposedly still wanting more money, as Katy Perry is making over double her co-judges..and have careers outside of this show that still sell tickets to stadiums. (Katy Perry late last year had to cancel her tour due to “scheduling conflicts”…or because he latest album is getting no airplay, according to our sources at our sister station, The New Mix 107.3)
