The best headline I have seen on this was “How To Survive The Great Frito-Lay Blackout of 2018”. The reason I find this so funny is that there is actually a Doritos shortage in New York City. Customers and stores are desperate to get their bags of chips. So what gives?
There is a driver walk-out with Frito-Lay. Looks like the drivers are currently making around $90,000/yr and Frito-Lay is wanting to cut their salary in a 1/3 to $60,000…and the drivers are having none of it. The manufacturer is doing this because of a new program called Snack to You, which delivers their product to retailers via UPS. Because of this, the tasty chips and pretzels are not being delivered and the store shelves are starting to get bare and the customers are getting upset. (Frito-Lay says this isn’t true, but some retailers disagree)
Keep in mind, this isn’t exclusive to Doritos, this includes Cheetos, Fritos, Lays, Funyuns, Sun Chips, Tostitos, Ruffles, Stacy’s, and SmartFood. All favorites of kids of all ages. Stores lose money when the shelves aren’t stocked, so some retailers are starting to stock up on similar products from other makers. We shall see how this works out for lovers of products that aren’t copied by the likes of Lance and other makers.
