If you hadn’t heard the news, Disney is removing, or has removed, all of their content from streaming services like Amazon, Netflix, Hulu, et al. The reason, they, like TLC/Discovery have created their own app, where you can stream your favorite shows on your time, via your phone, Smart TV, Roku, Apple TV and other streaming services.
As this is happening, there are whispers going around as to what kind of content besides the current Disney movie and Disney Channel fare will be available. One that has recently leaked is a 3rd re-boot of the Muppet Show.
If you remember the original Muppet Show ran from 1976-1981 and had a lot of high profile stars of the day on the show like Steve Martin, Alice Cooper, Elton John, Blondie and Richard Pryor to name a few. As you may have guessed, this was NOT the muppets that made Sesame Street the wholesome show it has continued to be, as the Muppet Show dealt with more mature themes of the time.
As the show ended, the Muppet Show went dormant in the USA, as it was only syndicated overseas, which was something that Jim Henson didn’t like, but agreed to.
Fast forward to 2015, after Disney bought ABC TV, they decided to reboot the show and have it contain even more mature themes. This didn’t work out very well, as the show was cancelled one year later.
However, 3rd times a charm, right? We shall see. It is being reported by a number sources that the Muppet Show will return, but on the Disney streaming app only. The announcement comes as these same sources are reporting more family friendly shows like original Disney movies, a new Star Wars series, a Monster’s Inc inspired show, as one inspired by High-School Musical.
As for what kind of content the show will have is yet to be known, but if Jim Henson’s Muppet Show is coming back, could Fraggle Rock be next?
