Right after Christmas in Sioux City, IA Wild Hill Honey received a devastating blow from 2 boys who were 12 and 13 years old. The boys were caught after vandalizing 50 hives and destroying the habitats of over half a million honey bees. These 2 boys effectively ended the business of Wild Hill Honey, who supplies honey to numerous stores and businesses in the area.
So how were these 2 boys found, as the vandalism occurred in a remote area and no one saw them…good police work and stupid criminals. The boys shoe prints lead the authorities to the 12 and 13 year olds.
Because of the boy’s ages, the expectation was that they would be tried in a juvenile court, but according to Iowa Law, the boys violated the following laws
- Criminal mischief (which is classified as a 1st degree felony)
- Agricultural animal facilities offenses
- Burglary (3rd degree felonies)
- Possession of burglar’s tools (a misdemeanor)
If the 2 were adults they would could receive a $10,000 fine and up to 10 years of jail time.
But it looks like their actions were so egregious, they will be tried as adults.
I am sure this isn’t the last time we will hear about this case, but thanks to the good people who have heard of this terrible event of the Wild Hill Honey, a GoFundMe Page has been up to help them rebuild. So far the page has garnered over $30,000 in donations. If you want to help out this business that does good for the environment and the state, check out the GoFundMe page. If you can’t make a donation, share it on Social Media and maybe someone you know can. Spreading the word is key.
