I know most kids with special needs and autism have hyper-sensitivity. So, with all of the lights and noises that come with the Christmas season, things can get pretty hectic for some children.
29 year old Kerry Magro has autism himself and he does something wonderful every year for other special needs kids. He works with a nonproft, KFM Making a Difference, and they offer free Santa visits in Jersey City.
Kerry and the organization have seen over 500 children with special needs.
The Santa visits are much more special and intimate that regular mall Santa visits. Kerry actually has a team of specialists with him like an occupational therapist, a speech therapist, and a physical therapist. Kerry will meet with up to eight kids at one time.
The kids have a half hour time slot to do whatever they want with Santa. They can just talk to him and tell him what they want for Christmas. Or they can do do arts and crafts, sing and dance, literally whatever the child wants. It’s his/her experience. And, this is all done in a warm, friendly environment with not a lot of lights and noises so that the children can be as calm as possible.
Kerry is one heck of a man! Read MORE.
