The Pet Rock was the first virtual pet. Hours of enjoyment, you could sleep with it, didn’t have to feed it, throw it around and it never died.
Then for some sick, cruel and demented reason, someone came up with the idea of a virtual digital pet…because that is better? Enter the Tamagotchi. Well, it did take off like wild fire.
This was better than the pet rock, because it required your attention. You had to feed it, clean up it’s poop, pay attention, rinse and repeat. These things were so popular and obsessive that they were banned from schools. And when the virtual pet died…there was no bringing it back to life. You now had a plastic piece of crap. When it died, you had to buy a new one.
Eventually, Tamagotchi’s died off in society and we had thought (hoped) they had died off forever.
Not so much…20 years after their release in 1997, they are returning to a store, child’s hands…and co-worker’s desk near you, as the Tamagotchi is celebrating it’s 20th anniversary. Now, while this could have been released as an app on your smartphone, the decision has been made to make it more like jewelry and key fob…and all for the bargain price of $14.99.
So what is different this time around, aside from the 20% smaller size, well they have made the virtual pet so that you have to feed it, play with it and clean up its…oh…well…nothing is different.
Happy 20th Anniversary, Tamagotchi…I think
