Meet Jayden Fontenot. Until August 11th, he was like any other 10-year old. But on August 11th, he went from any other kid to being a hero the brother he had yet to meet and his mother.
Jayden’s mother, Ashly, was expecting a new arrival to the family on September 20th, but the unborn brother, Daxx, had other ideas. He was ready to enter the world on August 11th. (As those who have experienced child birth will tell you, when the baby is ready to come, they are coming, ready or not.)
When Ashly went to the bathroom, the morning of August 11th, her water broke and she looked down to see her son, Daxx’s feet hanging out, which meant that Daxx was breech and was losing oxygen quickly. At this point, Ashly’s fiance was already at work, which is when she called the only person in the house who could help, her son Jayden.
Jayden went to work quickly and went next door to alert his Grandmother, but since she just had back surgery, she was unable to walk. So Ashly called 911 and would have to wait for paramedics to arrive.
Ashly realized that not only was Daxx losing oxygen, but she was losing a lot of blood, from what doctors said could have been from the premature birth. That is when she looked at her 10-year old son and told him that he would be delivering his brother.
(as an aside, if you have a 10-year old boy at home, you can imagine what their reaction might have been, but wait, there’s more)
With some instructions from Mom, Jayden became doctor of the moment and moved Daxx out of the breech position, rotated him and helped to deliver his brother. But Jayden noticed that something wasn’t right, Daxx wasn’t breathing and his feet were purple. Without prompting Jayden ran to the kitchen and grabbed a nasal aspirator and helped his mother pump air into this brother’s nose and mouth.
Just as paramedics arrived, baby Daxx began to breathe and because of Jayden’s selfless spirit and quick thinking, he became a hero that day.
